On the doorstep: under 20 minutes
Cismar Abbey is the cultural heart of the municipality and the second-largest monastic complex in Schleswig-Holstein. Founded by Benedictines in the 13th century, it is a textbook example of north German brick Gothic. Among its treasures is an exceptionally well-preserved winged altar, one of the oldest of its kind. Five audio stations explain the history; guided tours last about an hour and cost €3 for adults, free for children (Wednesdays and Saturdays at 5pm in summer). The abbey café opens April to October, Wednesday to Sunday, 11am–5pm. The gardens are free to enter.
Next door is the Haus der Natur (Bäderstraße 26) with over 4,000 shell species – €4 for adults, €1 for children. It sounds niche; it is surprisingly good.
Kellenhusen, eight kilometres north, has an illuminated pier and the adjoining Kellenhusen forest. It is markedly quieter than Grömitz – the right trip when peak season gets too busy.
Dahme and the Dahmeshöved lighthouse is watersports country: surfing, sailing, kiting. There are sunrise tours at the tower for early risers.
Half an hour to 45 minutes
Neustadt in Holstein (20 min) is a genuine small harbour town with fishing boats, a market on Tuesdays and Fridays and a long beach promenade. If the spa-resort atmosphere of Grömitz palls, this is the workaday alternative.
Hansa-Park Sierksdorf (25 min) is Germany's only theme park directly on the sea, open since 1977, with themed worlds from Vikings to fairground. A full day for families with children from around six. Booking online in advance is cheaper and skips the queue.
Timmendorfer Strand (40 min) brings Sea Life and a very manicured promenade. Considerably smarter than Grömitz, and priced accordingly.
Eutin (40 min) sits in Holstein Switzerland: a baroque castle with a park, lakes all around and the Eutin Festival in summer. The best non-coastal trip in the region.
Lübeck (45 min) is the classic: UNESCO World Heritage, the Holstentor, St Mary's Church, the Buddenbrook House and marzipan at Niederegger. A full day, and it combines well with the marzipan museum if you have children.
Further out, still worth it
Travemünde (50 min) has the four-masted barque Passat, the ferry port and a broad beach below the Brodten cliffs. Fehmarn (50 min) is windier and wider than the mainland – the Flügge lighthouse, the Meereszentrum aquarium with sharks, and the famous kitesurfing spots. Kiel (1 h 10) is worth it mainly for the harbour, the maritime museum or simply a city on the water.
An honest verdictMore than one bigger excursion a week rarely makes sense. Grömitz is a place to stay put – the region is lovely, but the beach outside the door is why you came.
Three destinations by bike
The Baltic Coastal Cycle Route runs straight through Grömitz and the terrain is flat to gently rolling. Three suggestions:
- Grömitz – Kellenhusen – Dahme and back, about 25 km, mostly along the coast. Stop at the pier in Kellenhusen.
- Medieval tour, 40.4 km, starting at the pier forecourt towards Neustadt in Holstein. Moderate, around 2 h 45 of riding.
- Manor houses tour, 50.3 km, starting at the pier and passing four country estates. Rated easy, around 3 h 30.

How to plan a day out sensibly
- Invert the weather: sunny days belong to the beach, excursions to overcast ones. It is the only planning rule that really matters.
- Leave early. Lübeck and Hansa-Park are noticeably emptier before 11am.
- Check opening hours. Many smaller museums and cafés in the region open only April to October, and not every day.
- Bus instead of car for Kellenhusen, Dahme and Neustadt: the ostseecard gets you reduced fares and saves hunting for a parking space.
