How often does it actually rain?
Statistically Grömitz has ten rain days in each of July and August – which sounds like a lot but usually means a twenty-minute shower followed by sun. Genuine all-day rain is rare. Still, when it comes it usually comes with wind, and a plan beats a debate over breakfast. More numbers in our climate table.
Seven ideas in Grömitz itself
- Grömitzer Welle, Kurpromenade 58 – 1,000 m² of water holding 1.1 million litres of treated seawater, a wave pool with waves up to a metre, nearly 70 metres of slides, a lazy river, a baby area and outdoor pools looking over the bay. Water temperature 27–33 °C, and reduced entry with the ostseecard.
- The sauna area at the Grömitzer Welle – panorama saunas with a sea view plus the sauna lounge. The best argument for a wet afternoon without children.
- Diving gondola on the pier – in rain but calm seas, a direct hit: €9 for adults, €6 for children up to 15, about 30 minutes underwater. Closed in storms. See our pier article.
- Dünenwelten, Kurpromenade 6a – indoor play world for younger children.
- EasyJump trampoline park, Grömitzer Höhe 3 – the most efficient way to burn off energy. Easyfitness for adults is next door.
- Cine Event Center, Kirchenstraße 27–29 – the local cinema, small and current.
- Strandhaus, Kurpromenade 20 – coffee, cake and a view of the grey sea. An underrated category: watching rain from indoors.

Rainy days with children
The reliable order by age: up to 6 Dünenwelten and the Grömitzer Welle baby area; 6 to 12 wave pool, slides, EasyJump and the diving gondola; 12 and up bowling in Sierksdorf, cinema, Lübeck.
One tip that always works for us: Hansa-Park in Sierksdorf (25 minutes) is far emptier in light rain than usual, and most rides keep running. Pack a poncho and spare clothes in the car and you get the park nearly to yourselves.
A wet day for two
Our own routine for a rainy day: sauna at the Grömitzer Welle in the morning, a fish roll on the promenade at lunchtime, Cismar Abbey and the abbey café in the afternoon (April to October, Wed–Sun 11am–5pm, home-made cake), then cooking with a view of the bay in the evening. Around Cismar there are also artists' studios – ceramics, jewellery, photography, textiles. An afternoon of browsing with no schedule.
If you still want to go outside
Honestly: a Baltic storm walk is one of the better reasons to come here at all. In a decent rain jacket, the empty beach in wind and surf is more impressive than any sunny day.
- The cliffs north of Grömitz – spectacular in an onshore wind, but keep well back from the edge.
- Amber hunting – best odds along the tideline after a storm with onshore wind, especially in the morning.
- The marina – a good place in wind to hear the rigging clatter, then thaw out in the harbour restaurant.
